Learning the Art of Portraiture

    Portraiture… Is Art.

A portrait is not something that should be taken lightly either. You are given the responsibility to capture the essence of an individual with one single image. I wanted to be better at this so I recently took a workshop put on by Dave Brosha and Wayne Simpson called “Character” which was about creating portraits.

I would see portraits that would just draw you in and demand your attention.  How do people create such amazing images? When the Character workshop was first released and only released to the eastern provinces with no dates set for Alberta I was disappointed. The demand for this workshop to come to the west must have been enough that dates opened up dates for Alberta. I eagerly put myself on a waiting list and when it went live I was one of the lucky few that managed to get a spot. It filled up within 90 seconds!!

Armed with very limited knowledge of lighting I packed up all my gear and headed off to Drumheller, Alberta for three days of being the biggest sponge I could be. Even if you have no knowledge of lighting and have never even taken photos of people before these two guys will make you feel comfortable and will guide you thru the process. Making new friends in the process is always an added bonus as well.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the workshop….
